METABODY FORUM 2019

BI / METAKHORÓS – Body Intelligence and choral/metabodily practices.

Movement revolutions/n-volutions for decolonizing bodies. Common bodies as plastic ecologies for a radical movement freedom.

MANIFESTO:     What is the IMF? Behind this ironic reappropriction of the IMF acronym hides a radical esthetico-polical proposal. The International Metabody Forum is neither an assembly nor a parliament, but a nomadic chorus of dancing, moving bodies that spread disalignments from normative and control regimes, accross borderscapes, proposing alternate ecologies for more plastic cultures, opening the scope of discourse-centric practices to a radical movement philosophy-politics. The forum events bring together research, creation, production, dissemination, education and activism in new anti-curatorial transdisciplinary processes, creating events accross countries, normative and border situations.

IMF 2019 has 8 iterations in 5 countries of Europe, the Americas and Asia, in refugee camps, prisons, urban and rural spaces, with indigenous, neurodiverse and queer communities, as well as in art centres, universities and theatres. This new stage bring to a new level the ontological hacking of sovereign, disciplinary and control regimes in a perceptual decolonization project with the BI/METAKHORÓS project, for disseminating choral practices, mobilinsg BI (Body Intelligence) as the swarming capacity for emergent bodily movement configurations/defigurations, n-figurations or n-volutions: a movement revolution/evolution for decolonizing bodies from millenia of geometries of domination.

METAKHORÓS is a nomadic opera/game/metaformance/architecture in 4 acts and a 5th element that stages the ontological tragedy of reductive ways of bodily and social organisation grounding sex, gender, emotion, desire, race, species or ability organisations in colonialism, capitalism and their recombination in digital hypercontol, and promotes experiential choral practices (as renewal of the ancient Dyonisian chorus) that disalign these formations while unleashing the swarming power of movement for a radical movement freedom and a movement r/evolution or n-volutions. Metakhorós unfolds in the different instantiations of the Metabody Forum: nomadic events of research-creation, worshops and performances happening during the year in several countries and continents, in spaces like refugee camps, prisons, urban and rural spaces, with indigenous, neurodiverse and queer communities, as well as in art centres, universities and theatres, infiltrating and transforming other spaces, opening them up to indeterminacy.

Proprioception technologies in the age of autonormous algorithms.

There is a sense that few people know and yet it is perhaps the most important of all: proprioception, which is the sense of internal movement of the body, grounded on the multitude of sensors of muscular elongation of the body and giving us continuous feedback , conscious and unconscious, of relative position and speed or effort. It is the sense that integrates all external sensations (and of the internal organs) in our movement, directly connecting action and perception. It is the sense in which the most primordial notion of self and relation to the world is based. It is the deepest ground of empathy and meaning, which connects us bodily and primordially with things,it is the basis of memory and experience as a process that does not necessarily go through rationalization, and that some theorists like Gibson have called direct perception .The sense of spatiality and temporality, of texture and dimension of something, of speed, of rhythm, all this and more generally the embodied knowledge of the world, of objects, actions and relationships, memory and learning, have a deep base in propioception.

However, the spectrum of proprioception and its fundamental role of multisensory integration, linked to the capacity for action, is radically minimized in a society that since the Renaissance at least (and with much earlier roots) is based on orienting ourselves according to fixed points of vision, reducing movement to coded segments, such as every time we click on a screen or keyboard. This impoverishment of the proprioceptive spectrum, which separates, reduces and atomizes us as bodies, is a fundamental problem that cannot be solved by attending only to the content of the media, but reinventing their most basic structure. In the current digital age, this impoverishment is behind the functioning of the autonomous algorithmic systems behind each app on a smartphone that redirect our behavior continuously.

How to reappropriate proprioception, not only giving it back a richer spectrum that perhaps had in the past but opening it to an infinite horizon of reinvention while resisting reduction and control? Proprioception, as a swarm that emerges from the bottom up in the bodies, exceeds the controlling ego and can be thought in terms of its richness and indeterminacy, of the sensitivity to create interrelations with the world and the others: alloception or expanded propioception for a new social ecology of the open, as crucial technology of the body, the common body and the metabody.

Unleashing the gugolplex in us: according to how we move we think, know, feel, sense and relate, configuring our worlds, yet we mostly move within a very narrow spectrum of aligned possibilities, in a culture of immobility which underlies salvery and colonialism. Even if we take just the combinations of only two positions of the roughly 300 joints of a human body, the number has more than 80 digits, nearly a gugol and far more than the number of estimated atoms in the known universe. Try to imagine the possibilities of continuous modulations of tissues made of billions of cell cytoskeletons contracting and trillions of proteins folding (each single one with more than a gugol of folding potentials) in continuous tissues accross the 300 joints and accross bodies and you will soon get beyond the gugolplex (a gugol to the power of gugol, a number with more digits tha atoms in the universe!). Our movement potentials are INFINITE: but they are not to be sought in the realm of quantity within the movements we already know, rather they need to sought in the qualitative variation of our proprioceptive swarms, which evolutively come from bacterial and other moelcular swarms. Unleashing our swarmlike capacity to move with endless qualitative variation while relationally conforming our ecologies requires sustained movement practices, choral or metabodily improvisation technes that create sustained plastic ecologies and resist reductive alignments, through subtle and ongoing microdeviations from any existing alignments. This implies creating a new sense of qualitaive freedom of movement and an ethics of the open: a movement revolution, evolution, n-volution for a radical, ongoing, epigenetic, microsexual mutation.

This year the Forum will propose a triple transversal thematic axis related to proprioception:

  • Proprioception Lab: In addition to a reflection and experimentation on proprioception itself in both philosophical and applied and therapeutic dimensions, as a way of radically rethinking the movement and the body, through the figure of the proprioceptive swarm, reflecting through it on two themes that are associated precisely because they have contributed to its minimization: space and algorithms.
  • AAA – Autonomous Algorithm Awareness: how to gain new awareness of how we interact with autonomous algorithmic systems and resist their control and impoverishment of experience by mobilizing the wealth of proprioceptive indeterminacy? This study is related to research on posthumanism as a critical vision of both classical humanism and the transformation of the human being in the digital age, which will be done in the forums of China and France.
  • METAKHÔRAos / Unbounded / n-figurations: as a proprioceptive and indetermination space: to radically rethink space as something not fixed and external, neither abstract, nor a mere substrate of becoming (neither the Aristotelian topos (immobile external place) nor the Platonic khôra (space and receptacle of becoming)) but inseparable from the body-movement and continually emerging from the multiplicity of entangled proprioceptions: a new kind of khorós (the choir of ancient tragedy, or group dance) and khaos (opening), new bodily configurations in which the less you control the more freedom of movement you have. How to mobilize such proprioceptive spacings of indetermination in the city and the land, in excess of their traditional codings?

These three themes will appear interrelated in the activities of the three branches of the Forum, which remain, as in previous years:

1. Multiversity / Multiplicity University
2. Ontohacklab / Metamedialab
3. Metatopia / Metakhôra environments

METAKHORÓS

METAKHORÓS is a nomadic opera/game/metaformance/architecture in 4 acts and a 5th element that stages the ontological tragedy of reductive ways of bodily and social organisation grounding sex, gender, emotion, desire, race, species or ability organisations in colonialism, capitalism and their recombination in digital hypercontol, and promotes experiential choral practices (as renewal of the ancient Dyonisian chorus) that disalign these formations while unleashing the swarming power of movement for a radical movement freedom and a movement r/evolution or n-volutions. Metakhorós happens in the different instantiations of the Metabody Forum: nomadic events of research-creation, worshops and performances happening during the year in several countries and continents, in spaces like refugee camps, prisons, urban and rural spaces, with indigenous, neurodiverse and queer communities, as well as in art centres, universities and theatres, infiltrating and transforming other spaces, opening them up to indeterminacy.

METAKHORÓS is a nomadic, distributed, multidisplinary creation, reseach, activism, education, anticuratorship and dissemination project that hacks the ontological and perceptual infrastructure of four main kinds of organization of bodies-movements:

  • centralised perception,
  • grids,
  • perspective (pyramids and frames),
  • panopticon (circularity and spheres),
  • autonomous algorithms, (AI, digital surveillance, Big Data, planetary scale computation and the interfaces of digital culture).

METAKHOROS

The underlying geometries of these movement organizations and their entangled evolution of increasing complexity is exposed:

  1. grids, pyramids and spheres are primary geometries;
  2. perspective is a mixture of grids, frames and pyramids;
  3. panopticon and radars are a mixture of circles and perspective, a circular perspective;
  4. camera-based surveillance systems disseminate the panoticon in urban space, connecting it to AI and Big Data networks,
  5. biometrics brings togetherperspective, profiling grid and quesntification technqiues, new distributed sensing technologies and Bigdata networks
  6. satellites conform an inverted, spherical, Earth-scale and mobile panopticon;
  7. selfies and emoticons disseminate contagious and traceable gestures in Big data Networks of profiling and orienting,
  8. Smartphones and AA (Autonomous Algorithm) systems, such as google maps, facebook, apps and social networks bring together into a new threshold satellites, gps, camera tracking, biometrics, big data from movements behaviours of each body and the Earth, into personalised maps that orient populations…

The project relates these movement organizations to systems of oppression based on

  • sex and gender,
  • race and background,
  • species and
  • abledness,

and to the dualisms of

  • man-woman
  • mind-body, (as well as emotion-reason and soul-body)
  • culture-nature,
  • subject-object.

The different formations, oppresion categories and dualisms are entangled and interrelated. Each dominant formation has associated ontohacking techniques, the system thus both revisits the genealogy of the dominant ontologies and provides new experiential realities for a more plastic, open and indeterminate culture.

4 different but interrelated techniques of movement-perception are proposed for not only disaligning those predominant systems, but for generating alternate ecologies for an indeterminate, illegible Common Body that defies capture while conforming sustained ecologies. The 4 techniques are developed as artistic procesess in 4 different but interrelated formats (installation, performance, metaformance, chorus) that involve the audience in their own experiential perceptual modification, exceeding the scope of representation, exhibition and performance, while revisiting the history of media (and their interfaces, architectures, choreographies and rhythms, from painting and photography, architecture, dance and music to media arts).

The project unfolds as meta-opera, metagame, metaexhibition, metatheory and metaformance in 4 Acts, strata, entangled spaces or swarms. Each of them proposes n-figuration techniques (both configurations and defigurations of swarm-like bodily composition) in relation to the 4 dominant alignments, and four types of n-volutions (movement revolutions and evolutions as openings).

These are developed and presented in/as the nomadic Metabody Forum/Khorós, accross countries and borderscapes, in refugee Camps, with indigenous communities, in prisons, with neurodiverse people and sexual minorities, in urban and rural environments, as nomadic Choral practice accross disciplines and spaces, accross creation, theory and political-social action. The Forum/Khorós is part of a decolonization project including symposiums and publications, workshops for choral techniques of ontohacking, productions and presentations of installations-performances. The nomadic Forum itself is the ongoing elaboration of choral techniques and works accross borderscapes, creating disalignments while mobilising and sustaining common bodies, for a movement revolution and evolution (or rather n-volutions), that sets to motion a culture of immobility.

The choral improvisational structure is both a drama and a game in which one may explore the genealogy of dominant modes of bodily organisation and enact different kinds of disalignment.

Metastructure: four entangled Acts/disalignments/n-figurations/n-volutions/metabodies/metatopias of the choral MetaOpera/Metagame/Metaformance:

  • Amorphogenesis – Installation/performance – beyond the grid (textiles, monoliths, agriculture, cities, pixels, microchips), rationalism-abledness, space-orientation-cuantification and the subject-object dualism – for a neurodiverse culture and an autistic perception – with neurodiverse communities.
    • 3d metagaming environment
  • Microsexes – Metaformance/performance 1 a 1 – beyond anatomy and perspective (pyramids and frames, cameras, screens, selfies), sex and the man-woman dualism, selfie and hypersexwork regimes – por a micro/metasex and post/transgender culture – with (post)queer communities.
    • surveillance cameras on the body and electornically processed voice
  • Un/bounded – Flexinamic Metasculpture – beyond the panopticon (circles, spheres, globes, clocks, emoticons) race-colonialism, emoticons-emotions-biometrics, click/clock time and the culture-nature dualism – for a decolonial, illegible affect, plastic rhythm culture – with prisoners, refugees, indigenous communities.
    • flexinamic metastructures
  • Khorós/Swarms – Choral disalignment intervention – beyond AA (Autonomous Algorithm networks, Big Data, PCs, Interfaces, Smartphones, social networks, AI, planetary scale computation systems – grounded on perspective, panoticons and grids) species-humanism, the mind-body dualism – for a metahumanist, common proprioceptive body-culture – with meta/poshumanistic and transpecies communities.
    • micromovement techniques
