Part of the BODYNET Project

See next iteration done in 2021: Planetary Embrace

a project by Jaime del Val / Reverso

A flexible robotic wearable sculpture moves embracing the person who is in contact with it, while affecting an electronic soundscape, interactive lighting and abstract VR. It moves by getting transmitted the movement of someone wearing a sensor in the forearm and performing a gesture of (self)hugging at a distance, in the same room or over the internet, so that the structure is a sort of avatar. It can also move in response to data coming live from the internet on ecosystem disruption, which is underlying the outbreak of pandemics that now prevents us from hugging, making it felt in the body and prompting a planetary embrace movement in reply. Lastly it can also move autonomously by peculiar forms of AI that promote behavioral indeterminacy of the structure while inviting the interactors to move in always new ways in relating to the movements of the structure, enriching embodied and proprioceptive experience and counteracting the historical tendency to immobility and control that is also underlying ecosystem disruption and that is exponentially rising in times of the pandemic. The algorithms involve indeterminacy and evolve in relation both to updates of internet data on ecosystem disruption and to people’s interactions, in the tension between the pervasiveness of disruption and the behavioral indeterminacy and freedom that people may manifest in embracing, moving and feeling their own bodies in times of social distance and confinement.

In times of social distance its not allowed to hug. This piece plays with the idea and action of hugging in multiple ways: ironc, critical, paradoxal, and promoting visionary new ways to feel oneself, others and the world precisely in times when this seems to be neglected.

Hugging yourself. Feeling yourself. Hugging yourself at a distance. Hugging someone at a distance. Hugging your alien avatar. Your alien Avatar hugs you. Hugging an architecture that hugs you…

Distant bodies propriocepting / Broadband distant bodies (or how to enrich proprioceptive sensations in distant relations)

Propriocepting oneself anew through the relation with an other  (thorugh minimal variations in movement)

Restaging the drama of social distance and confinement  (by reinventing the sense of moving body)

Telehug / Autohug / Metahug Machine – (propriocepting in times of social distance) – EEP – Expanded and emergent proprioception machine 1 – (proprioception technologies in the age of algorithms)

Reverso presents the prototype of a brand new robotics Tele-hugging machine. New Flexinamic wearable architecture-sculpture for nomadic, performative and metaformative actions.

tele-étreint – tele-embrace –  distant embrace – distant hug – telehugging – teleabrazo – abrazo distante – tele-abbraccio – tele-Umarmung…
