Presentation

Metahumanist philosophy, aesthetics and politics has been developed by philosopher-artist-activist Jaym* del Val in over 150 published writings since 2002 till today (2024), while Metahumanism as intellectual movement was launched in 2010 by the text A Metahumanist Manifesto jointly written by Del Val and Stefan Lorenz Sorgner.

According to the Posthuman Studies Reader “Del Val is the most crucial contributor to the autonomous multi-leveled subject of Metahumanism”. Metahumanist philosophy as proposed by Del Val takes beyond the positions of critical posthumanism and opposes transhumanism in addressing core issues of the ecological and social crises of our times as well as a radical rethinking of ontology, epistemology and ethics, and novel approaches to the theory of technics, communication, cognition, perception, aesthetics, politics, human history, evolution, and cosmology, blended with a radical antispeciesist, anticolonialist, and (post-)queer lense.

The following is an online compilation of 150 writings by Del Val exploring the full genealogy of the over 25 novel concepts and neologisms introduced by Del Val in the 2010 A Metahumanism Manifesto jointly written with Sorgner. These concepts and neologisms, which Del Val had developed since 2002 and which constitute the almost totality of the Metahumanist Manifesto, and hence of metahumanist philosophy, include:

  2. metabody, metabodies as relational fields, the body or metabody as field of relational forces (2002-2009) – later evolving into the Metabody project (2013-2016)
  3. relationality, relational ontology, relational ecology, relational process, relational movement, relational body (building upon Erin Manning and Karen Barad) (2009-2016)
  4. the body as relational movement (building upon Erin Manning) that operates from the molecular and bacterial, through the individual and psychic, to the social, planetary and cosmic levels, – later evolving into a theory of proprioception and BI, and into a swarming chaosmology building upon Margulis and others (2018-2024) and more recently the Metabiosis concept (2023-2024) – evolving since 2017 into Radical Movement Philosophy (2017-2024)
  5. overcoming of cartesian dualisms, non-dualistic relationalism, (2009)

All the novel concepts and neologisms appearing in the 2010 A Metahumanist Manifesto have their sources and elaboration in writings by Del Val between 2002 and 2009, and constitute the core of Metahumanist philosophy. They have kept evolving in Del Val’s writings till today into a “Radical Movement Philosophy” and a theory of the Algoricene or Age of Extinctions and Algorithms, that has been praised by Brian Massumi as “a unique theory of the body, […] Drawing on a broad range of philosophical sources, ancient and modern, and in dialogue with complexity theory and embodied cognition, Del Val develops his own highly original approach to the body in movement – or more precisely, to the body as movement.” More recently a new turn was introduced since 2022, with a critical theory of the Trash-human, Human Supremacism, and the Planetary Holocaust along novel metahumanist counterproposals.

The 2010 A Metahumanist Manifesto already contained the political germ coming more to the front in the 2022 Metahuman Futures Manifesto, with its rejection of control and dominion, of form, map, dualism and identity, its embrace of relationalism and indeterminacy, it was thus already laying the grounds for metahumanism’s profound antagonism with transhumanism. On the controversy on this between Del Val and Sorgner see the 2023 writing “Clarifying Metahumanism”.

The anthology of texts by Del Val includes the republishing of key texts in revised version, previously published in prestigious journals such as World Futures, Leonardo, Performance Research, Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media, Gramma, Journal of Posthumanism, The Agonist, Inflexions, Virus, Moscow Art Magazine, Artnodes, Cuadernos de Información y Comunicación, El Rapto de Europa, Blank, AMínima, Parole de Queer; in the books and collections Posthuman Studies Reader, Beyond Humanism, Heterópolis, Error and Ambiguity, Enciclopedia Crítica de Género, and others published by UNAM (Mexico), ILIA (Ecuador), Edulp (Argentina), and numerous conference proceedings. It also includes yet unpublished materials from conference papers imparted in universities such as Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, Duke, Cambridge, Goldsmiths, NYIT, UNAM, EWHA, and numerous others, including the 13 Beyond Humanism Conferences of which Jaym* del Val has been cofounder and co-organiser, as well as symposia dedicated to Del Val’s projects in Berkeley, New York, Mexico, or Madrid, amongst other, that have been laying the grounds for metahumanist philosophy and aesthetico-political practice. The compilation includes a 2008 interview with Judith Butler, the essay “Intimare” by Erin Manning on Del Val’s work, as well as texts by other authors on Del Val’s proposals.

An introduction presents metahumanism, comments and situates the texts as an archaeology of concepts, as well as outlines the precursors of metahumanism. The texts are by Del Val unless specified otherwise. The selection following  is articulated partly chronologically and partly along conceptual strands and languages, in four different epochs, highlighting around 60 core texts accompanied by “minor” essays, project texts and manifestos, altogether 150 pieces, around 75 in English, 75 in Spanish and some in other languages, and 10 pieces with or by collaborators (Judith Butler, Erin Manning, Yunus Tuncel Evi Sampanikou, Cagdas Dedeoglu, Alicia Peñalba, Rubén Lopez Cano, Teresa Vilarós and Stefan Lorenz Sorgner), as well as 6 interviews, 10 manifestos and over 25 art project texts, as an organised listing to open access available materials online. The appendix provides online sources on the numerous metahumanist initiatives, events, art and research projects, multiannual EU project and metahuman metaformamnces and workshops that Del Val has organised. The foundational 2002 essay written in Italian appears opening both the Spanish, English and multiligual collections.

In these writings unfolds a philosophical field in continuous evolution and mutation with three intertwined aspects: critique, the development of new concepts and pragmatics, (associated with transdisciplinary art and technology projects of Jaime del Val that have evolved at the same time, as well as activism). Main topics include post- and metahumanism, digital culture, queer theory and other branches of critical theory, media art, neuroscience, philosophies of the body, movement and perception amongst others. From the very first essay written in Italian in 2002, the concept of the metabody was proposed, associated to a theory of metaformativity which has evolved into a Radical Philosophy of Movement, a theory of the Algoricene or age of algorithms and the pragmatics of ontohacking, metaformance and BI (Body Intelligence).
